What do points make?

What do points make?
To improve football we've got to have incentives to score more and more goals. A Brazilian care-free approach would be a tranformation for the English game. In an interview with Gary Lineker for the BBC recently the new England coach Fabio Capello stressed the need for 'fantasy' from his players. By this I took it to mean, skill, technique and the ability to beat a man in a one-on-one situation.

Technique, ability and skill will always win through in the end, but if we rewarded extra goals with extra points, those qualities would become immediately evudent to every fan. At the national level we must play attractively again and as a result I'm convinced that support for the game at every level would improve. Remember, you cannot force anyone to watch football, but you can tempt them back by serving up the sort of entertainment they so obviously feel is missing. 'Goal-filled' football is a game based on skill. It's a simple remedy for a simple game.

You might argue that there are not the goalscorers around these days, but my answer to that is simple - if you look hard enough you will find them. Goalscoring is a natural ability, if you have it you will score goals at any level. Youngsters with this special skill are coming through all the time - just look at Theo Robinson for Hereford United last season. That's why I firmly believe that the general standard of football is higher than it ever was.

Let's make the game spectacular in a tidal wave of goals. Then things will start to come right again at the top level with England. If you play sheer unadulterated football the right results will come your way. The moment you start worrying beforehand about results, tension creeps in and that is an altogether bad thing. Playing attractive football is an attitude of mind.

I cannot understand why our referees are so currently indignant about the exposure of their decisions on television; be they right or wrong. These things are talking points and are part and parcel of football's great attraction - they are the controversial parts of the game. Fans discuss these down the pub, not legislative topics which are way above their heads and of no interest to anyone.

More goals, carefree attitudes and attractive football will trigger a chain reaction which will bring the fans back into football in their droves. No manager must ever criticise his supporters because he must remember that when they pay their admission charge they pay for the right to criticise whatever they like.

So, if you are one of those people who have been taken in by the so-called experts who say the game is drastically wrong in this country, then forget it!

Get rid of your negativity and we can all get back to rewarding everyone with goals. You'd like that wouldn't you?
